How to generate captions for a video, free

The whole job can be done on this page. The generator above transcribes inside the browser tab and hands you a subtitle file — and if you want captions styled and burned into the picture instead, the editor takes it from there.

   Add your video to the generator above. Drop in an MP4, MOV, WebM or audio file. There is no account, no upload and no limit on file size or length — the file is read from your disk into the tab.

   Choose the language that is spoken. Pick it from the list rather than relying on detection. For Hindi speech choose "Hinglish (Indian)" if you want the captions in Roman letters, which is how most Indian creators caption.

   Press generate and let it run locally. A speech model of about 80 MB downloads once and is then cached. Transcription runs on your own CPU, so it costs nothing to run and there is no per-minute meter behind it — which is why there is no cap on how much you use.

   Take the file, or go on to styled captions. Download .srt, .vtt or .txt straight from here. If you want captions burned into the video with a style, open the editor instead: same transcription, plus fonts, colours, animations and an MP4 export.

How the captions are generated

A speech-to-text model runs on your own device and transcribes what is said, with timing for every word. That word-level timing is what makes karaoke-style highlighting line up as each word is spoken.

Pick the spoken language before you generate and the timing lands more accurately. Every word is editable afterwards, so a name or a bit of slang the model missed takes a second to fix.

Captions are only half the job — the look is the other half. There are 30+ templates covering the trending short-form styles: bold word-by-word pops, a clean cinematic serif, boxed highlights, and more, all with entrance animations.

You control the font, size, colour, outline, position and per-word accent font, so the captions match your brand instead of looking like every other tool’s default.

Free, with nothing metered

AI Caption Cut is free to use, with unlimited exports at 480p carrying a small watermark.
