Find the font a video’s captions use

There is a good answer to “what font is that” for a picture, and almost none for a video. Font finders want a still image of clean type on a plain background; a caption is moving, outlined, sitting over footage, and often on screen for half a second. So the usual advice is to open the subtitle file and read the style block — which works right up until the captions are burned into the picture, which on a reel they always are. This measures the letters instead.

  1. Open the editor with your own video. Go to aicaptioncut.com and add the video you are making — not the one you are asking about — and generate its captions first. The match lands on existing captions, so on an empty timeline it changes a setting you cannot see.

  2. Press “Match a video’s caption style” in the Media panel. Open the Media panel and press “Match a video’s caption style”, then give it the video whose captions you want to identify. Both files stay on your device — neither is uploaded.

Measured, not recognised — and why that is the honest framing

This is not font recognition. There is no model here that has learned what Bebas Neue looks like and can name it. It measures what is on screen and finds the nearest face among the ones available, which means two things worth being clear about.

It will never name a font it cannot give you. If a video uses a licensed brand typeface, an identifier might name it and then you would have to go and buy it; this hands you the closest thing you can actually use, immediately.

And it will not be right about the name in the way a paid identifier sometimes is. If what you need is the actual typeface for a brand guideline, this is the wrong tool and a dedicated font identifier on a clean still is the right one. If what you need is captions that look like those captions, this gets you there in one step.

What makes a video easy or hard to read

Large, high-contrast captions in the middle or lower third read best — which is most short-form video, because those are the captions built to be legible on a phone. Heavy outlines help rather than hurt: the outline is measured too, as a ratio of the letter, and it is part of the look you are copying.

Hard cases are small captions, low contrast against a busy background, heavy compression artefacts around the type, and captions that appear for only one or two frames. A style that shows up once in a long video may not be sampled at all.

It also reads casing, which matters more than people expect. A lot of what reads as “that font” in a viral reel is really a heavy sans in full capitals with a thick outline, and the casing and the outline are doing as much of the work as the typeface.

It reads more than the font

Since it is already measuring the lettering, it reads the rest of the look at the same time: colour, including a separate colour for the highlighted word, position in the frame, outline and shadow, and how each caption arrives — fade, pop, slide or typewriter.

That is usually what was actually wanted. “What font is this” is nearly always shorthand for “how do I make mine look like that”, and the font on its own gets you a fraction of the way there. Copying the whole style is the more complete answer to the question being asked.

Can it name the exact font?

Does the video get uploaded to identify the font?
